A Mid-Missouri county is taking action tonight against a substance some are calling an alternative to marijuana. Pettis county commissioners today voted to ban spice cannabanoids, like the product K2, that give users a "high" like pot. So now if you're caught possessing or selling the drug you could face a $500 fine or 30 days in jail.
"We're hoping to get out in front of it so there are not violations." Pettis County Prosecutor Jeff Mittelhauser says.
Pettis County officials say k-2 made its way into the county very quickly. They felt it was necessary to deal with it now before it became a problem. The county's prosecuting attorney, Jeff Mittelhauser, was the first to warn the commissioners about the syntheticO&O MediaRecovery 4 x64 oem drug.
"We basically act on his advice in these areas and he believes it could be a problem down the road as it's beginning to surface here in Pettis County we wanted to get those things off," Pettis County Presiding Commissioner Rusty Kahrs tells us.
Kahrs told ABC 17 News the commission just wanted to protect the health of its residents. The ordinance would be File Renamer Turbo 2.62 oemreplaced by a state law, if that law passes the current legislative session.
Columbia senator Kurt Schaefer has sponsored that bill and tells us he likes what Pettis County did.
"I think it would be ridiculous for the state and federal government and even county if the state isn't going to move quick enough to take some action on it.
Spice cannabanoids sell for about 30 dollars a package at smoke shops and even gas stations. The products are outlawed in some countries but legal in most of the United States.
