MU Police Looking at Tapes of Possible Hate Crime

Suspects dumped cotton balls on the lawn of MU's Black Culture Center.

We checked in with police, who are now looking over surveillance video in order to catch the suspects. Students are still angry about people dumping cotton in the lawn and front bushes of the black culture center. Most people who talked with ABC 17 News feel this was a racist act that was meant to do nothing but hurt them.

"It just makes me so mad because I could never think of something to do to hurt someone else like that and it hurt a large group of people," MU freshman Courtney Harris tells us.

 

Other students hope university of Missouri police find the suspects. But MUPD tells us they have no leads and are currently looking at surveillance tapes. So as University of Missouri police continue to investigate, some students say they still want to know why people would do something like this.

 

"It just bothers me a little bit, I mean we live in a modern age 2010 and to have people throw cotton on grass, it's not appropriate," MU sophomore Maxwell Kwarteng says.

 

Other's told us there is nothing good that can come from this.

 

"It kind of makes me upset because it makes everyone look bad, it makes the school look bad, it really didn't buy Adobe Creative Suite 3 Master Collectiondo anything good for anyone," MU freshman Joe Kordecki says.

 

The Legion of Black Collegians have scheduled a town hall meeting for Monday evening at 5 p.m. Some students are hoping everyone comes out of the meeting understanding that racism still exists.

 

The University of Missouri's Chancellor released a statement regarding the incident:

   

"In today's early morning hours, a disheartening and inexcusable act was committed on our campus when cotton balls were strewn at the front entrance to our Gaines/Oldham Black Culture Center. Those guilty of this despicable action have not yet been identified, but MUPD became involved immediately and is conducting an investigation.buy Allok AVI DivX MPEG to DVD Converter 1.2 This university is fully committed to tolerance and respect for every one of its members, and this kind of conduct will not be tolerated at MU. I urge anyone who has information related to this crime to contact MUPD immediately and to join me in expressing your own individual concern and support to the members of our community who were the apparent targets. I have been informed that the Legion of Black Collegians is calling a Town Hall Meeting for Monday at 5 p.m., location to be determined. "MU celebrates the diversity of our community and this behavior offends us all."
